About the Hurricanes
The Martha’s Vineyard Hurricanes Youth Running Club introduces island middle schoolers to the basics of cross country and age-appropriate distance running. Our goal is to encourage kids to love running, and carry it on through the high school level here on Martha’s Vineyard and beyond. We are in our third year, and provide a year-round opportunity for our runners to participate in interscholastic meets, as well as local 5K fun runs, at little or no cost.
Reaan is the head coach and the co-founder of the Hurricanes. Coach Reaan's experience includes several ultra marathons. He is a USATF certified coach. He was born in South-Africa where he earned a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Stellenbosch University, and has been living on Martha's Vineyard since 1994. As a Masters runner he is competitive in events from local 5k's to international 50 mile endurance races. He recently achieved a lifetime goal by successfully finishing a 100 mile ultra marathon.
Coach Reaan's background as a competitive endurance runner, and his love of running led him to co-found the Hurricanes three years ago, to provide opportunities to island children to run competitively, and to introduce them to a life time love of running and physical fitness. Coach Reaan brings to the table years of competitive running experience, with an emphasis on injury free training. His weekly, age appropriate training sessions are directed towards developing endurance, strength and mental tenacity. An avid outdoorsman, Coach Reaan also hopes to instill a love of the outdoors, and a lifetime appreciation of healthy living. Coach Steenkamp's famous "mud runs," "night runs," and "snow runs," are a fun and exhilarating experience for our young runners!
Kimberly Kirk is the Girls' Coach, as well as the co-founder and manager of the Hurricanes. A USATF certified coach, Kimberly grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and relocated to Massachusetts 10 years ago. Coach Kimberly has a bachelor's degree from Wellesley College, and a JD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. She has been a dedicated runner since college, and has participated in running events both on the island and beyond for the past 5 years.
The Hurricanes bring together Coach Kimberly's love of running and working with children with her experience in business planning and event organization. Coach Kimberly co-founded the club three years ago with the hopes of providing competitive running opportunities to island children. Since then, she has worked to grow the organization into a non-profit based, developmental running program which serves as a feeder program for the island's high school cross country and track programs. Recently, Coach Kimberly helped the Club to host the island's first kid sponsored 5K, the Pinkletink Pace. Proceeds from the race went to the First Hugs orphanage and to fund the Club's nonprofit mission. Coach Kimberly, a consistent runner for most of her life, encourages kids of all abilities to learn the basics of running, with the hopes they will continue to run in the years to come. She hopes to continue to expand the program, to encourage more island kids to join in the fun, healthy living and excitement that the Hurricanes can offer.
